🧭 Guide: Preparing Your Parent to Travel Alone (If No Companion Is Found)
We understand the concern and anxiety when a loved one — especially an elderly parent — has to travel internationally alone. While NRI Travel Buddy Match is working to connect travelers wherever possible, sometimes a companion may not be available.
In such cases, preparation is the key to confidence and safety. Here's how you can help:
✈️ 1. Before the Journey: Booking & Planning
- Book Wheelchair Assistance (if needed)
Request this during flight booking or later via airline website/helpline. It ensures:- Staff support at every airport
- Fast-track immigration and security
- Boarding assistance
- Seat Selection
At check-in (online or airport), request a seat:- Near a helpful-looking fellow passenger (if known)
- Close to the toilet
- Aisle seat for easier movement
- Connect with Airline Staff
At check-in, politely inform the counter staff:
“My elderly parent is traveling alone. Could you please assign them a Seat next to a passenger traveling on the same connection?”
📱 2. Phone & Connectivity
- Activate International Roaming on your parent’s SIM or provide a global SIM card, specially Activate International Data pack, so that you can do Video Calls during the transit.
- Pre-save emergency numbers:
- Your number
- Airline helpline
- Relative’s number at arrival city
- Teach them to:
- Answer incoming calls
- Dial home
- Open WhatsApp (if used)
📘 3. Prepare a Custom Travel Guide
Give them a printed or digital guide, with:
- Flight details (route, layovers, boarding gates if known)
- Airline name & logos
- Photos of terminals or signage
- Simple step-by-step airport instructions
💡 Use this sample navigation guide template and ask ChatGPT to personalize it with flight details and preferred language (e.g., Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil).
🛂 4. Immigration Q&A Preparation
Print or write down a simple cheat sheet of expected questions with answers in English + native language. For example:
Question | Answer |
|---|---|
Do you speak English? | A little bit. |
Why are you traveling? | To visit my son/daughter. |
Where are you staying? | [Address or Hotel Name] |
🎯 Download the sample immigration Q&A template here.
🎒 5. What to Carry (Hand Luggage Essentials)
- Passport & ticket printouts
- Medication (with doctor’s note if necessary)
- Light snacks (dry fruits, biscuits)
- Sweater or shawl
- Power bank & charger
- A folder with:
- Travel guide
- Contact numbers
- Transit airport instructions
- Immigration Q&A
- Travel insurance copy
💬 6. Teach Key Phrases
Prepare 5–10 simple English phrases like:
- “I need help.”
- “Where is Gate 23?”
- “I am going to [Destination].”
- “Can you please show me?”
If they’re unsure in English, use a language card:
“I speak Hindi. I am traveling to Frankfurt. Can you please help me?”
This can be printed and worn around the neck or kept in the guide.
💛 7. Emotional Support
- Reassure them that airports are used to elderly travelers
- Remind them: they can always ask for help
- Practice a mini dry-run at a local airport or watch YouTube videos of the terminal they’ll travel through
✅ Final Checklist:
✔ Wheelchair booked (if needed)
✔ Roaming activated
✔ Seat preference noted
✔ Travel guide printed
✔ Immigration Q&A ready
✔ Carry-on bag packed with essentials
✔ Emergency numbers saved
✔ Emotional preparation done!
With this preparation, your parent may not just manage the journey — but feel confident doing it. And in the best-case scenario, if a travel companion is found at the last minute, all of this will still help.
